Letter to the President of the Slovak Republic
Lvov (Ukraine), 6 June 2013
President of the Slovak Republic JUDr. Ivan Gašparovič Hodžovo nám. 1 P.O.Box 128 81000 Bratislava 1
Dear Mr President,
the Byzantine Catholic Patriarchate hereby addresses You with a request that as President of the Slovak Republic, You should not sign the amendment to the Criminal Code concerning so-called sexual orientation.
The term “hatred on grounds of sexual orientation” is vague, and being a lawyer, associate professor and candidate of science, You are certainly very well aware that to adopt unclear laws whose interpretation may eventually cause discrimination against 99% of the Slovak population is a crime.
This year we commemorate the anniversary of the arrival of Saints Cyril and Methodius who apart from the Gospel also brought Christian laws which shaped the Slovak nation for more than 1,000 years.
Dear Mr President, be brave and do not sign this law, even at the cost of EU opposition. Do not sign it even at the cost of eventual dismissal from Your post. At this historic hour, You will appear before the Slovak nation either as a hero or as a traitor. There is no third choice for You today. May ex-President of the Czech Republic, V. Klaus, be an example of heroism to You.
Praying for You and blessing You,
+ Elijah
Patriarch of the Byzantine Catholic Patriarchate
