Reflection on 1Jn 5:11-12

And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life,
and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life;
he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.

Think about the word of life and answer these questions:

Who gives eternal life?

Where is eternal life found?

Who has eternal life?

Who does not have eternal life?

The word of life is followed by this verse: “These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.” (1Jn 5:13)

It says here that we who believe in the name of the Son of God should know that we have eternal life. Not that we will have it after death, but that we have it now. We have it by faith while on earth, but we do have it, and we will attain it fully after this trial of life.

Someone may ask you: Do you have eternal life? If you answer, “I don’t know,” you do not stand on the Word of God. If you have believed and received Jesus, you have eternal life. If you were baptized as a child, then you must believe as an adult, because Jesus says, “He who believes and is baptized will be saved.” This verse speaks about faith in Jesus Christ.

Of course, we can lose eternal life through serious sin and hard-heartedness, so we must always repent and let Jesus reign in our hearts.

To dig deeper into the word of life, we also present other quotes from Scripture that have a bearing on it:

AND THIS IS THE TESTIMONY…

Which of the following changes have you experienced in your life after your conversion, that is, after receiving Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour and Lord?

Inner peace                                                                                                Desire to read the Bible

New awareness of sin                                                                               Victory over sin

New love for God                                                                                      Attitude changes

Sense of forgiveness                                                                                New concern for others

As we repeat the word of life daily over these two weeks, it would be good to take a few moments, pick up the Bible and find the quotes listed. For example, it would be ideal for the whole family to get together on Sunday evening and go through God’s Word according to the questions given.
