Reflection on Psa 82:5
They know nothing, they understand nothing.
They walk about in darkness;
all the foundations of the earth are shaken.
This verse of the Psalm is very relevant for today. It applies primarily to men of political power and men of the Church, but to some extent it applies to all of us.
What to do to be able to know and understand and not walk about in darkness but in the light? We must be serious about Jesus in our lives, because He is the Light of the world. In Him is the fullness of wisdom and knowledge. If we are just influenced by so-called mainstream or smartphone wisdom, we know absolutely nothing about the essential things, namely the salvation of the soul, and we do not understand what we should do for its sake or how to overcome lies and deceit. In this blindness, then, all the foundations of the earth are shaken.
This verse of the Psalm resembles Psalm 11:3, “If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?”
We now live in a time when all moral foundations, on which Christian Europe was established, are shaken. The current antilaws privilege evil and punish the righteous; they privilege immorality and punish moral people as “-phobes”. In fact, everything is so arranged as to bring humanity to spiritual, psychological and physical suicide. We are helpless in this situation. But we should not give way to despair. We have to unite our helplessness and suffering to the suffering of our crucified Lord and Saviour and to the sorrow of His Mother, who stood by the cross and is the example for us of perfect union by being spiritually crucified with Christ. From a human point of view, the situation is hopeless, but we know that nothing is impossible with God. He can change the minds of those who are controlled by the spirit of lies and death, He can! But He is waiting for you, for your prayer of faith and your perseverance. So the reality is that it is you who decide the future of humanity – you and your faithfulness to Jesus crucified and risen. Remember that nothing is impossible with God! This is what the Archangel Gabriel said to the Blessed Virgin, and she said, “I am the bondslave of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word.” And Elizabeth cried out, “Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished.” Trust in God and have faith in God’s almighty power that works through powerlessness. Church history as well as the lives of the saints testify to this. We are conquerors, after all, if we remain faithful to Christ, even though it may cost us our lives. In the end, we will receive the martyr’s crown in glory! This life’s struggle decides our eternal life!
