Let us seek first the kingdom of God
“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Mt 6:33)
Seeking is a painful process. If you have lost e.g. your identity papers or money, you seek it anxiously because you need it. And when you have found it, you rejoice. Let us seek first the kingdom of God. We ought to seek it anxiously until we find it…
Let us also seek His righteousness. It consists in the fact that Jesus took on Himself the just punishment for my and your sin and shows His mercy on us. God’s mercy is in Him. Jesus died for me and gives me freely, through faith, the kingdom of God, eternal happiness. I should know it and seek it.
We seek daily our own things, being eager for news or preoccupied with our own affairs. However, we should seek first the kingdom of God, i.e. the will of God, and God will care for all other things. “…and all these things shall be added to you.” (Mt 6:33) God knows that you need to provide for your family, to fulfil your responsibilities to your children or parents, to fulfil the duties of your job… He knows about your problems. But Jesus says: “Seek first the kingdom of God.” Do we seek it? Do we seek first the kingdom of God every day? How many people neglect to pray in the morning and just hurry to work. Stop at least for one minute: What is in store for me today? How many problems? And amid this turmoil, I should seek the kingdom of God. So let me kneel for a while and pray: “Lord, let Your will be done! This and this awaits me, I’ll be away travelling, I’ll have a meeting with a certain person… Where is the kingdom of God there?” “Seek…” Where to seek it? Above all in prayer. Such prayer, such life. This is the most important thing. Let us seek God in prayer, and God will reveal to us the kingdom of God and He will also give us all we need. When we pray, the Lord gives us the light: Do this and this. Write it down and continue to pray. Then the Lord inspires you again: Give a call to this or that person, go to this or that shop, e.g. when you are doing some repairs and the like. Such normal practical things. God will show you concretely what you are to do. If we give our time to God, He will pay us back with interest, twice or three times as much. People often say: “I don’t have time to pray.” If you have no time for God, you will get lost in the chaos of everyday life and waste your time on silly things. If you spend time in earnest prayer, God will help you. He will give you the light and grace you need.
