Reflection on Phi 2:5.8
“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus…
He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death,
even the death of the cross.”
What mind was in Christ Jesus? And therefore, what mind should be in us? Not the proud mind of the spirit of the world. Rather, Jesus humbled Himself and was obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.
In what did His great humiliation consist? In this: Being in very nature God, co-equal with the Father, He made Himself nothing, humbled Himself and took on human nature. Jesus was obedient to the Heavenly Father also in that He accepted the means of our salvation – death on the cross. When we embrace this mind of Christ, God can save souls through us, through our inner death, which is a complete renunciation of our own will and bringing it into harmony with Christ’s obedience. However, in everyday small matters, we usually automatically assert our will. We need to learn to pause and use these moments to surrender our will to Jesus. By doing so, we spiritually enter into Christ’s death. This is where true love for God lies.
