“But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife for any reason
except fornication causes her to commit adultery;
and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery.”
Jesus develops the truth about the sacrament of marriage in chapter 19: The Pharisees came to Him, testing Him, and saying to Him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?” And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh?’ So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.” They said to Him, “Why then did Moses command to give a certificate of divorce, and to put her away?” He said to them, “Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for fornication, and marries another, commits adultery.” His disciples said to Him, “If such is the case of the man with his wife, it is better not to marry.” But He said to them, “All cannot accept this saying, but only those to whom it has been given.”
Jesus instituted the sacrament of marriage, and He emphasizes that marriage is a union between one man and one woman. The previous custom was polygamy. Abraham or King David had more than one wife. Polygamy is still a custom among the Muslims. However, Islam does not view a woman as equal to a man. A woman has almost no rights and, moreover, if she commits adultery, she must be stoned to death. If a man is jealous of his wife, he can e.g. cut her nose off. Muslim women have their whole body covered from head to feet. In paganism likewise, a woman was never treated equally or with the same dignity as a man. Buddhism has a very negative attitude towards a woman. Buddhist texts even present her as something repulsive. Considering this, if we look at the modern feminist movement which promotes perversion and whose fruit is the stealing of children, European feminists should be sent to found their movement in Saudi Arabia. It is 99% sure that not one of them would remain alive.
Sexuality has its God-established order in marriage. It is connected with faithfulness and the procreation and education of children. Husband and wife should not only be one flesh but also one soul. They can only achieve this through a lifelong purification and self-humiliation in their relationship. An expression of love is to bear one another’s burdens. In marriage as a sacrament, husband and wife should come to mature spiritual unity, to true unity in Christ.
In the Epistle to the Ephesians, the Apostle Paul, speaking about the mystery of the Church, the Mystical Body of Christ, writes: “Submit to one another in the fear of God. Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Saviour of the body. Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. For we are members of His body. ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church. Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.”
Concerning modern corrupt society and the cult of impurity and perversion which influences not only young people but children too, a situation has now arisen which seems almost impossible to solve. It can only be solved from the position of a living faith, unquestioning obedience to the sound principles of the Gospel, a personal struggle for the purity of mind, the grace of God and a living community of Christians who defend moral values against the invasion of gender ideology, homosexuality and other perversions. Without prayer, without a living faith, without the struggle of the mind, it is impossible today even for converted Christians to remain faithful to one another. A serious problem is when men or women travel for work to Western Europe (Czech Republic, Italy, Germany, Portugal). What good will it do if they earn money but the family breaks up and children are left artificial orphans? The Church needs holy wives – heroic and exemplary!
(Concerning invalidity of the marriage, it is a matter to be considered by canon law both of the Eastern and Western Churches.)
