J\u00e1 no in\u00edcio do s\u00e9culo XX, o pano de fundo espiritual subjacente \u00e0 teologia hist\u00f3rico-cr\u00edtica deu origem a um movimento espiritual na Igreja Cat\u00f3lica chamado <em>modernismo<\/em>. Em 1907, S\u00e3o Pio X publicou a enc\u00edclica <em>Pascendi Dominici gregis<\/em>, atrav\u00e9s da qual desmascarou esse esp\u00edrito de morte e ate\u00edsmo, e a Igreja Cat\u00f3lica rompeu oficialmente com ele.
