Human nature, without respecting the law of the Gospel, reacts in the same way in essence: envy towards others, rivalry, envy when someone has something better, when someone has spiritual gifts, or even when someone carries a cross, and on the other hand self-pity and sulkiness (both before God and people). This all takes the subtlest forms, but it is in essence our \u201cself\u201d which refuses to humble itself, to live in uncertainty, to obey God and to submit to Him. It always wants to have \u2013 possess \u2013 its own thoughts, plans, feelings.<!--more--> When someone rebukes us \u2013 that means, tells us the truth in plain words, angrily or sarcastically, maybe sometimes mixed with untruth, suddenly our defence mechanism is triggered \u2013 brilliant inspirations, apologies etc., and moreover bitterness towards this person, even bordering on hatred. This is how the old self reacts. However, we should thank those who rebuke us because they are our greatest benefactors.
