A reply to the letter of Gregorios III, “Patriarch” for Melchites in Antioch, Alexandria and Jerusalem

Lvov, 20 April 2011

Reverend Father,

thank You for inventing a simple and true title of the Patriarchs – “Reverend Father” besides the title of the “Holy Father”.

We hereby reply to Your letter of 16 April 2011.

Quotation from Your letter: “Reverend Father, with great sadness, I have read your letter of last Wednesday, about the establishment of the schismatic so-called ‘Byzantine Catholic Patriarchate’.

Response: As for sadness, it is on our part because we regarded You as a true-Catholic Patriarch. We are no schismatic Patriarchate; we are in true communion with the true papacy which dissociates itself from all ancient and modern heresies.

Quotation: You write to His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI … But you condemn his decision for the beatification of Pope John Paul II…

Response: Beatification of John Paul II will cause the spirit of Assisi – the spirit of antichrist – to be placed on the altar of the Church. Moreover, it will establish the rule of antichrist throughout the world. This is a flagrant crime for which the Pope will excommunicate himself from the Church and bring down a curse. You should warn the Pope.

Quotation: You write to me: ‘The Byzantine Catholic Patriarchate is in true communion with your Patriarchate’. But your ‘Synod’ did ‘excommunicate’ me several times for my participation in Church events you did disapprove.

Response: We disapprove such events that are disapproved by Christ and by the Gospel. That means the events which are a manifestation of apostasy or seriously violate the faith and of which the Scripture says: If anyone preaches any other gospel to you, let him be accursed. (Gal 1:8-9)

Quotation: As you probably know, I attended, on March 27, in Kyiv, the enthronement of His Beatitude Major Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk, and the Archbishop emeritus, His Most Eminent Beatitude Lubomyr Cardinal Huzar, is my friend.

Response: Concerning enthronement of Father Sviatoslav Shevchuk, we have to inform You that his Episcopal consecration is not valid. The apostate bishops consecrated him invalidly.

If ex-Cardinal Huzar is really Your friend, You partake of the following heresies of his:

1)   he casts doubt upon the Divinity of Christ,

2)   he casts doubt upon the Virginity of the Mother of God,

3)   he casts doubt upon the eternity of hell,

4)   he approves of divination and practises it himself,

5)   he approves of homosexuality.

In such case Jesus Christ is no longer Your friend.

Quotation: The truth is that you are not in communion with our Holy Father, the Pope of Rome, His Holiness Benedict XVI, and that you are not in communion with the Melkite Greek Catholic Church.

Response: We are in unity with the papacy which defends the orthodox doctrine and the laws of God, but we are not in unity with the Popes who deny this, one of them being John Paul II.

If Benedict XVI will betray the papacy and Christ by beatifying an apostate on 1 May 2011, we shall not be in communion with him.

To the extent that the Melchite Church is in unity with the true papacy and with the teaching of the Gospel, we are in communion with this Church; however, if this Church unites with the spirit of Assisi, with the spirit of antichrist, we shall not be in communion with this Church.

Reverend Father, on behalf of Christ we beseech You to renounce the heresies of L. Huzar as well as the antichristian spirit of Assisi and not to attend beatification of an apostate. If You do attend this event, You will bring God’s anathema upon Yourself. This is not a threat but a salvific warning.

Praying for You,

Patriarch Elijah and Bishops’ Synod of the UOGCC
